ALL IN!
This is my third album on Little Village. One of the many joys of this tiny gem of a label punching so far above its weight is the incredibly diverse community of artists it embraces.
Through LV, I’ve gotten to know, work with and be influenced by players, singers and writers from different bins in the record shop than I’m usually associated with - blues, jazz, gospel, mariachi, classical, R&B… all genres I love, but across the floor in another aisle. We’ve done label revues together, and guested on each other’s recordings and, as it turns out, LV’s essential mission of building a better, more empathetic world through the commonality of music doesn’t apply just to the consumers of art, but to the creators. In the larger scheme of things, musical genre is a false construct helpful for describing the location of a particular moment in the vast continuum of music, but there are no real, hard borders. Everything good can - and should - bleed a little or a lot into the roux that is the fluid world of music.
For this project, Jim Pugh, Kid Andersen and I wanted to take it a step further and produce an album that centered on collaboration with my LV label mates. If you’re a hard-core genre purist, this may not be for you. I am not. I’m interested in expanding my palette and I’ve found the kitchen, staff and pantry to make it happen. I’m all in!
